Apanamae Portfolio

2003 | 2002 | 2001 | 2000 | 1998-99 | 1997 | 1995

In general, my work is aimed towards uncovering the truths and misconceptions of black people. Although some works come across very agressive and others more subtle, my intention is to give the "black image" a layered iconography in both execution and meaning.

What also is most evident in the portfolio viewed here is the distinct differences in concentrations of theme and processes. Almost every year I chose a new path of direction, that for the most part proved quite rewarding and enriching to my development as an artist.

The works viewed here chronologically begins in 1995 and ends (currently) in 2000. In 1995's "Catch the Monkeys" series I created a large body of work based off of a game of the same name. By incorporating negative stereotypical images of black people, along with the cartooned characters of the game, I created an unapologetic chilling view of marginalized racial identification through borrowed fine art and tv/advertisement imagery. In 1997 my subject matter moved more towards at first iconoclastic portraits of r&b and hip hop celebrities. Then later on towards combining known and unknown universal symbols that gave the series in this year a highly personal and reflective tone.

In 1998-99 the work went through various changes and directions that included some interesting results (such as paintings with either black or white backgrounds and explorations into collage). In 2000 as well as currently I am developing an extensive body of new works dedicated to subjectively representing the black male .

In closing, I hope you the viewer enjoy the images here on this site. If you have any questions about purchasing and/or inquires about the work itself feel free to contact me at your convenience.
